How do you bring life to an otherwise dull room?
The answer lies in the unique personality of each homeowner—that personality mirrors a certain lifestyle. As the storyteller, you can craft a narrative of your home space through your own eyes. You can be the curator of your own aesthetically pleasing interiors guided by these simple principles:
Style with Intention
First off, approach designing your home with a clear mind and a clean slate. It helps to remove as much as décor as you can in a space, re-evaluate the layout of furniture, and slowly put things back in. The objective is to return important items while keeping the space as serene as possible. Refer to how your space looks and try not to place all the items you removed back in—chances are, many of these can be stored in cabinets instead, or given away to someone who could now appreciate them more. During the day, draw the heavy curtains to allow some natural light in, while a layer of sheer curtains can filter harsh light and provide some privacy.
Select functional, lasting accents
Surely, you want accents that reflect your character within your home. It would be worthwhile to invest on accents that are functional as well as those that can outlast trends. Select timeless pieces over items that would be unfashionable in a few months or years. Art and hardbound books in subjects of your interest are always great conversation-starters. Functional décor like trays, bowls, and vases bring objects together and make wonderful centerpiece arrangements. Perfumed candles can also help create an ambient mood with the faint glow of candle flames while permeating a fragrance you love.
Consider neutral colors
As key determinants of minimalism, neutral colors are your guide to implementing good design and furnishing elements. This is where you bring in nature within the confines of your walls as neutral tones represent calmness and peace. Understand the classics
A classic room transcends time. When creating your space with this in mind, you can consider symmetry and materiality. A play on symmetry can balance a composition within your space. Perfect symmetry is formal, elegant, but can also feel too rigid or predictable when overdone. Asymmetry can generate visual interest and a more relaxed feeling, however if done improperly, it can look confused and chaotic.
To work with symmetry, determine your room’s focal point. For instance, you can have a sofa and a matching pair of pillows. How about a mantle combined with matching lamps or bases or even plants? If you’d like to go asymmetric instead, balance a floor lamp with a slim accent table and vase on the other side. Layouts are also not restricted to planes and perpendicularity. A sense of balance is the key here.
Classic patterns and quality of materials can also give you timeless room style. You can opt for solid, plaids, stripes, and damasks with soft colors and veer away from strong geometrics, chevrons, and animal prints. As for materials—natural stone, wood, marble, steel, bronze, glass, and leather will stay with you for many years with proper care and age beautifully in your home.
