Taking it slow at home

by Carol Altarejos & Nicole Tan

Humans are creatures of habit

And our surroundings influence how habits are formed. Once aware, it’s surprising to learn about the details of our dwellings and how they make us feel in our daily lives.

Tranquil space

What comes to mind when you think about a tranquil place? You might be imagining a quiet, remote haven but what if you could create pockets of serenity where you live? Bring out that inner peace within you by setting a tone of calmness in your own home.

Try rearranging furniture to optimize space whether it’s in the living room, bedroom or kitchen. Free up a tabletop surface or improve clearances between furniture so you can flow around your room. Moving freely through a neat and spacious area allows you to maximize your area and lengthen sight lines, contributing to a vast-looking space.

Allow sunlight to enter through your windows. Consider caring for a small collection of plants and flowers along windows with generous daylight. A touch of nature inside the house helps purify the air and at the same time gives a nice feeling of comfort, softening the home.

Natural light illuminates any room and brings good energy. If it gets too bright and hot, pull down the shades to keep the room cool. The right lighting does wonders to any room and a person’s wellbeing. At night, you can light a mildly scented candle or switch on your lamp. Take time to appreciate the different moods of your home and relax in its evening atmosphere.

Living in modesty

You don’t need to spend a lot of money all at once to achieve the perfect look for your interiors. Styling your space should be motivating and enjoyable. If you haven’t found the right item, that’s alright, take time to slowly layer items until you finally have ones that bring continued meaning to you. Begin with choosing simple but functional furniture pieces that are designed to provide lasting comfort and value for money. Select items that will allow you to create a home you can cherish for subsequent years.

Accessorize with restraint and choose humble yet fascinating décor that is part of your unique life story. You can add contrast and depth to a neutral-toned sofa by adding interesting throw pillows… but not too many—it’s best to leave a place to sit. Sofas are meant to be used and not merely for display.

The clutter challenge

The challenge in maintaining a peaceful home is how to keep it tidy and clutter-free. Messy interiors bring visual unrest and anxiety. One easy way to bring back the order in your house is to organize. Try not to leave things lying around the house, instead tuck them away in cabinets and storage bins. Place things that are usually used in one designated corner where it’s visible.

Keep your table and counter tops as free as possible. It would be ideal if there’s a generous surface for items you need to rest on the table from time to time. You can leave minimal decor like a fruit bowl or a centerpiece accent.

Labeling canisters and boxes not only make your storage space look well-organized, but also saves a lot of time when you are finding something. It makes for effortless, less-complicated living. Putting labels on items you store helps keep clutter in its place.

Achieving your own tranquil vibe relies on how you live in your home and in your natural element. It is possible to create your own unique environment with thoughtful interior design. Take it slow and enjoy the process of introducing only essential items into your life and home.
